Food for Thought: Ultimate Italian Deli

Bay Cities DeliJerry’s? Been there. Factor’s? Done that. Bay Cities? Not once since moving to L.A. in 1991, that is until this past weekend, when the stars finally aligned for an impromptu early lunch, complete with a prized parking lot spot and a primo patio table at this Santa Monica institution. Irene even lucked out as a woman handed over her number, opting instead to pull a pre-made sandwich from the deli counter basket and in the process sparing us the pain of a minimum 20-minute wait.

“Quick, what’s our order gonna be?” I drooled impatiently. We agreed on a family tag-team of three large sandwiches: the Bay Cities’ signature “The Godmother” (made with genoa salami, mortadella, coppacola, ham, prosciutto and provolone), $8.15; one hot pastrami with mustard, $8.40; and one roast beef (london broil), $8.85; some classic macaroni salad and a pasta salad with bacon and red and green peppers. All hoagies are on this insane roll with “the works” — a combination of mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, Italian dressing and mild or hot pepper salad.

We never even got around to cracking the wax paper on the roast beef sub so we all enjoyed that one the next day while comparing and contrasting the merits of the Bay Cities sandwich vs. our beloved Jersey Mike’s hero. Either way, we’re all in.
